Anaesthesia is a carefully planned process that begins well before your pet enters the operating theatre. Before every procedure, our specialist anaesthetist reviews your pet’s medical history, performs a thorough examination, and assesses any relevant blood tests and diagnostic results to develop an anaesthetic plan tailored to their individual needs.

Throughout the procedure, your pet is cared for by our specialist anaesthetist and experienced anaesthesia nurses, with continuous monitoring from induction through to recovery to help ensure the highest standards of safety and care.

The most important thing you can do to prepare for dog anesthesia or a feline anaesthetic procedure is to fast your pet from midnight the night before. Food in the stomach increases the risk of complications during anaesthesia, so it’s important to follow fasting guidelines carefully. Fresh water is fine to leave out overnight. If your pet is on regular medications, please let our team know as some medications may need to be paused or adjusted before anesthesia and cats or dogs is administered.

Pet anesthesia at ACES is managed using a multi-modal approach, meaning we use a combination of techniques including nerve blocks, sedation, total intravenous anaesthesia, and continuous analgesic infusions to keep your pet safe, comfortable, and pain free throughout their procedure. After dog anesthesia or a feline procedure, your pet will be moved to our dedicated post-operative recovery suite, a calm, quiet space designed to support a smooth and comfortable recovery. Our nursing team monitors every patient closely during this time, managing pain and keeping your pet as settled as possible as they wake up. For anesthesia and cats especially, a calm recovery environment makes a significant difference to how quickly and comfortably they come around. Before your pet goes home, our team will walk you through their recovery plan and answer any questions you have.
