What to expect during your visit

Your first visit with our internal medicine team is unhurried and thorough. Your first consultation is dedicated almost entirely to understanding your pet, their history, their symptoms, and the full picture of their health.

Our team is always happy to help you understand what to expect and make sure you and your pet feel prepared for your visit.

Diagnostic Tests

Common diagnostic tests may include blood work, urinalysis, ultrasound, radiography, CT/MRI, endoscopy, and fluoroscopy. Your clinican will discuss recommended tests with you before anything proceeds.

Treatment and Planning

Once we have a clear picture, your clinician will discuss the findings in detail and develop a treatment plan tailored specifically for your pet.

Ongoing Care & Recovery

We stay closely involved throughout your pet’s care. This includes thorough open communication with your regular veterinarian.

Please note: we ask that your pet fasts from midnight the night before their appointment. Fresh water is fine throughout.

Unlike a general vet visit, a vet internal medicine specialist has completed years of advanced training across areas including endocrinology, gastroenterology, nephrology, haematology, respiratory disease, and neuromuscular conditions. If your pet has a condition that hasn’t responded to treatment, or a diagnosis that requires deeper investigation, an internal medicine vet is often the most important next step.

Your regular vet may refer your pet to an internal medicine specialist if they have a complex, multi-system condition that requires specialist investigation, or if a diagnosis has been difficult to reach through standard testing. Common reasons pets are referred to vet internal medicine include unexplained weight loss, chronic vomiting or diarrhoea, kidney or liver disease, hormonal conditions such as diabetes or thyroid disease, immune-mediated conditions, and neurological symptoms such as seizures or muscle weakness.

Yes, we ask that your pet fasts from midnight the night before their internal medicine vet appointment. Fresh water is fine to leave out throughout the night. Fasting is important as it ensures the most accurate results from any diagnostic tests our vet internal medicine team may recommend during or after your pet’s consultation. If you have any concerns about fasting your pet due to an existing health condition, please contact our team before the appointment and we’ll advise you accordingly.

Our vet internal medicine team works closely and collaboratively with your regular vet throughout your pet’s care. From the moment a referral is received, we keep your vet informed at every stage, sharing findings, test results, and treatment plans to make sure your pet’s care is seamless and well coordinated. Once your pet is ready to return to your regular vet’s care, our internal medicine vet team will provide a thorough discharge summary and remain available for any follow up questions.

In most cases a referral from your regular vet is recommended before seeing our internal medicine vet team, as this ensures we have the full clinical picture before your pet’s first appointment.
